REVIEW

Adorable poems and illustrations follow through the days of young children. I loved the whimsy and truth in these - picking your nose as a poem?! It works in this book! This small book held my attention for the whole read through - I think many kids will be able to sit through several poems, but this would be a great book to pick a poem or two a night to work through at a slower pace for caregiver's to read to kiddos.

I think the author's love of his children and grandchildren really shine through in this book. It's light, and fun, and comforting to read these, as if a beloved grandparent were reading them to you!

This will be great for parents, caregivers, grandparents, or anyone who wants to get in touch with their inner child!

Thank you to the author for a free copy in exchange for an honest review!

Meet the Author:

Bruce Shutts has spent countless hours reading children’s picture books to his three children and five grandchildren over the past forty years. He also loves to create humorous poems for nearly every occasion he can imagine. Coupled with the fact that he often thinks and acts like a three-to-six-year-old, it makes his entrance into the world of children’s books a natural fit. He currently is retired with his wife of forty-five years and loves to travel, play golf, and (you guessed it) read books at night to his grandkids!

Author Interview

Question: With so many children’s picture books in print, what makes “The Moon in the Sky” unique?

Answer: It is true that are many out there. The majority of children’s books are of the fairy tale or make-believe variety. I wanted to write one that kids could truly identify with and was actually written from the perspective of three-to-six-year-olds. They have experienced nearly everything in this book so they should see themselves and laugh along.

Question: You wrote your book in rhyme. Why did you choose this over simple prose?

Answer: I have always loved writing whimsical poems for all occasions. If done right, rhyming is fun to read and adds a sing-song feel to the stories. Parents appreciate the cleverness of a good rhyme and it helps children memorize the words. However, limiting yourself to a three-to-six-year-old’s vocabulary can be a challenge.

Question: Where did the title “The Moon in the Sky” come from?

Answer: I mention in the book that my wife, along with her mom, wrote a poem about the moon when she was in second grade. It was passed down through our kids and grandkids. Though my book has nothing to do with the moon, I was always going to title it in honor of that poem that started it all.

Question: Any advice for someone wanting to write a children’s picture book.

Answer: I guess the standard response would be to “know your audience”. Never underestimate the ability of a three-to-six-year-old to catch on to clever nuance. You can easily bore them if you’re not careful. They have a pretty good sense of humor at that age so play on that if you can.

Question: In writing a children’s picture book, do you write for the children or the parents?

Answer: Great question! I actually try to do both. If the parent enjoys the book, they will undoubtably read it with genuine enthusiasm, and that invariably effects how a child responds to the book. The author and illustrator can provide the story and pictures but the reader has to add the passion.
