by Brett Armstrong
Genre: YA Epic Fantasy/Christian Fantasy
Release date: April 2019
Summary:
Jason is an expert at running from his past. When it catches up, he finds himself hiding in a peculiar inn listening to a tale from centuries past.
The story is Anargen's, a teen who is pulled from all he loves to follow his oaths of loyalty to the fabled King of the Realms. Together with his mentor, Cinaed, he rides north on a special quest to mediate peace talks between ancient foes--the men of Ecthelowall and the dwarfs of Ordumair. Nothing goes as planned. Many on both sides of the dispute despise Anargen's Order. Worse, an arcane evil has returned to the North. This "Grey Scourge" seeks to ruin the peace talks and ensure a lost treasure held by the dwarfs is never found by those for whom it is meant.
As Anargen's story unfolds, Jason begins to wonder whether it is truly just a fable. He soon finds himself drawn into the conflict Anargen faced--a battle which has shaped and can destroy his world.
Quest of Fire definitely had some musical inspirations in terms of tone. Below are some of the songs I listened to while writing it and either gave me ideas for tone or just put me in a creative mood. If Quest of Fire is ever made into a movie, I’d say one song would be key, Lament for Father.
While I was writing The Gathering Dark and its companion novella Succession, I had the idea for a few lines of a song to help set the tone of a scene. After I wove in the lyrics, life happened and suddenly I resonated with the lyrics I had so far. I finished the song and when I looked at it, I thought the music director at my church might think it was cool. He’s a big fantasy fan and liked my last book, so I showed him the lyrics and he loved them. He offered to write some music to go with it and then perform the song. Since he was basically offering me a dream come true I happily accepted. The instrumental version is in The Gathering Dark’s trailer and I’ve been giving away the full version to anyone who buys the book. It’s epic and sweeping and tragic and if Quest of Fire makes it to a movie screen, Lament for Father absolutely needs to be played.
You can hear the instrumental version in the book’s trailer: https://www.youtube.com/embed/t3KEBnl7E80?rel=0
