In
the year 2516 humans share Earth with elusive vampires and GeMs—a
new species of blood-drinkers who appeared after the Flood.
Months
before his five-hundredth birthday, Theodor De Croix, Prince of The
Old Coven, crosses paths with Vivienne. Torn between proving himself
worthy of his bloodline and centuries-old beliefs about true love, he
saves her life but rejects the idea that she might be sent to him by
fate itself.
Vivienne is a human scientist turned GeM in an
accident. Body and mind forever altered, she struggles every day to
adapt to her new life. Attracted to the man who saved her, but
fearing his kind, she finds herself in more danger than ever.
Caught
up in a whirlwind of dreams and evil plots, both must confront their
own demons in order to save each other, testing the powers of fate
and love.
EXCERPT
She walked by his side, down the stone stairs leading to the beach.
The wind calmed the lower they descended. Not another soul on the beach for as far as he could see.
Already late afternoon, the sun offered another memorable show. The sky changed hues every second. From golds to tangerines and hot pinks, they bled into one another. The sea joined in, reflecting all the breathtaking colors.
After the last step, Vivienne stopped and tried to withdraw her hand from Theodor’s.
With one quick move, he wrapped his arms around her body, drawing her close to him. Her heart instantly accelerated, and his joined in the rush. She might’ve tried to keep her distance from him, but he had different plans.
“If you let me turn you, your lights would probably be gold.”
“What?” She quickly retreated from his embrace. Her eyes widened with terror, her lips trembled, and her breath became shallow.
“Viv—”
“Is this why you brought me here, to turn me into . . . one of you?”
Theodor reached out to her, trying to hug her close to him, but she continued to back away. Her fear spiked. He’d hoped she wouldn’t be afraid of him anymore after he’d saved her life twice. I guess I was wrong.
“It’s not why I brought you here.”
I blamed her for trying to lie to me, and what do I do? I’m such a hypocrite.
“Stay away from me,” Vivienne yelled, and tears pooled in her eyes.
“Viv, I would never hurt you.”
Finally, he caught her and cradled her body against his. Gently, he tilted her face to him and wiped her tears. I hate seeing her cry.
“Please don’t turn me.”
Her whisper hurt him. He knew she would break his heart.
“I won’t.”
“Promise me.”
Vivienne’s demand saddened him more. He didn’t want to lose her. “I promise I won’t turn you against your wish.”
Her fear filled his heart with pain. Without another word, he pressed her head to his chest and closed his eyes.
I have to find a way. I can’t lose her. Not now, not ever. Controlling her mind or altering her decision is out of the question. I couldn’t live the rest of my life wondering if she accepted me because she loved me enough to do so or because of my doing.
Two elongated shadows, desperately clinging to each other, darkened the sand behind them. The wind had stopped, but the storm inside him raged.
Theodor lifted her face to him again. Her long lashes fluttered opened, and her light-hazel eyes gazed at him.
Slowly, his head dipped. She opened her mouth as if trying to say something, but no sound came out.
His lips lightly touched hers, and Vivienne closed her eyes, forcing the tears down her cheeks. Theodor tasted her lips, sweeter than he expected. He backed a couple of inches to look in her eyes. Long lashes flew open.
Their first kiss hurt him. The salty droplets running down her face and to his lips turned what supposed to be a happy moment into a sad one. Guilt suffocated him. I made her cry.
“Viv . . .” His heartbroken whisper flew in the evening breeze.
“I want to go home.”
