Thanks so much to the author for a free copy in exchange for an honest review! This book was incredibly informative - so much so that for very young children, this might be a touch overwhelming. For older children there are tons of things to explore after reading the book, especially fun things such as edible water capsules!
It was a great mix of fiction and non-fiction to keep children engaged while also teaching them something new. I would love to see this with professional illustrations to tie it all together. Thank you again!

Why do I write kids’ books and what have I learned in the process?

I keep asking myself this question because, like any art form, book writing is not easy. It might seem simple to write a story but then adding dialog, characters, illustrations and working through all the details of editing, layout and publishing involves many steps. When you see the final product, no matter how much you like it, you realize that now you must also market it. So why do it?
I have been an environmentalist and Architect for 40 years. My career goal was to work as part of a team to solve environmental problems and as an Architect, I did that. I saw this book as an opportunity to reach people with a hopeful and positive environmental message and as a way allow a non-profit to sell the book and use the money to support education about plastic pollution.
I don’t know if my books will every succeed on a large scale, but I’ve had some small successes. Once a dad sent me a cute video of his son reading one of my books. A young girl who liked my book wrote me a suggestion for “the next book”. Kids have sent me pictures that they have drawn of turtles, birds, and whales. I have read in classrooms and summer camps and been told that others have read the book in workshops. My friends and family have always been supportive and excited to help. I think people like to rally around and help other people with their projects.
I write and illustrate kids book because I want kids to learn about and develop an appreciation for the complexity of the world around them. I hope I can influence at least a few kids to pursue a career in environmental fields where they can work to leave the world in a better place. I don’t have any regrets. I wrote the kids’ books I wanted to write, no matter how many copies I sell.
Nancy Carlisle is an author and illustrator who writes hopeful books for kids that interweave facts and fiction about the environment and global responsibility. During her 38-year career as a sustainable architect and researcher, her focus was on the environment. She led work nationally and internationally on sustainable and energy efficient buildings and communities and won awards for collaboratively designing award-winning sustainable buildings, a laboratory campus, and improving the energy efficiency of U.S. laboratories. Since retiring, Nancy has worked as a volunteer teaching English as a Second Language and mentors first generation college students. She is a strong advocate against plastic waste not only because it pollutes our oceans and water but also because it contributes CO2 to our atmosphere.
Nancy enjoys the outdoors and international travel. She is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and the Society of Environmental Journalists. She studies botanical illustrating and French language.
