I just finished reading all four books in this series of heart-warming, lovable characters, who hold your attention throughout
their escapades. After the first book, you know the member of the Pond Community behaving badly will redeem her/himself, but how? That is the question and the surprise and the charm of each book. Oh so subtly, young and old alike learn that happiness comes from living graciously, with courtesy, kindness, respect, and compassion for others. My congratulations to the author, Mother Melania, who enables us to learn valuable lessons without lecturing us, and to her illustrator, Cayce-Marie Halsell, who allows us to see the charming animals of the Pond in action. Part of the charm of the illustrations is that they look like they were done with crayons! I loved the effect. The books are perfect for adults to read to younger children and as books for children starting to read on their own. I bought all four for my Godson -- two for Christmas and two for his birthday in March. I can’t wait to read them to him. - 5-Star Review on Amazon

Review: Mimi the Mynah
Thank you so much to the author, Mother Melania for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The book is well written, and the illustrations give the animals character without being overly cartoony, making me feel that this will be a good book for early readers to read on their own, as well as have caregivers read to younger children.
There is heart and story here, with gentle conflict, and great resolution. Mother Melania states in her bio that she "strives to teach virtue in a fun, non-preachy way," and that's exactly what this book feels like! There is a life lesson here on sharing, taking care of community, making sure that everyone has enough, but it never feels judgmental, or preachy - this book does not read as a "Christian" book, for those of you who are of different faiths, such as myself.
Overall, I liked this book and the life lessons that Mimi has to teach us!

Our monastery is known locally for our koi pond. When our sisterhood arrived here in 2009, the pond was empty due to a split liner and our koi were vacationing with a parishioner (well, more with her koi and goldfish than with her). People were constantly asking us when we would be getting them back. So, when we had the funds, we repaired the pond and brought the first few koi back. Unfortunately, our friend had an emergency with her pond, and we had to reacclimate forty koi all at once. Among our koi were about ten that had lost their vibrant colors and patterns. That’s the polite version. Our main koi tender just called them ‘ugly.’
Reacclimating forty koi into a newly repaired pond would have been hard enough for experts, let alone us novices. So, we had several weeks of nail-biting adventures and lost a few of our koi in the process. One day, when things were calm, we were watching the koi and noticed several of the ‘ugly’ ones swimming toward us. Our koi tender looked at them, smiled, and said, “They’re beautiful – because they’re alive.”
That was years ago, but I’ve never forgotten the moral. We easily see the flaws of those around us, but if we invest ourselves in their lives, we will be amazed at just how beautiful they can be.
Although I started writing the Fearless and Friends series long before this episode, I think (or, at least, hope) that all the books reflect this theme one way or another. No matter how badly a Duck Pond denizen is behaving, the others refuse to give up on him or her and, in the process, find the beauty hidden beneath all the flaws. I am grateful to the many people who did this for me, and I hope that these books can, in some small way, encourage readers to look for – and find – the intrinsic beauty of the people around them.
