A big thank you to the author for a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review!

I was so happy to have a holiday story come to me that doesn't feature white characters. I'm always on the look out for stories that center folks who aren't white; we need more diversity in books!

This sweet read is about a set of siblings that are hunting for the Gingersnap cookie snatcher. They follow a trail of cookie crumbs all throughout the house - the snatcher is a surprise indeed!

The book held my attention right from the very beginning, and the wee one I read the story to was engaged as well. She loved the bright illustrations and followed along with delight. I believe kids of all ages will love this story!

The back of the book has some sheet music and lyrics for a tune, - fellow librarians, this might be fun to sing with ukulele during story time! It was also mentioned that voice patterns are hidden within the illustrations as well - how clever, creative, and fun!

Overall, I was SO happy to have been able to read this, it'll be a holiday story that stays in the family for years. 5 Triquetras to this one! I'll be buying a copy as a gift for friends with young ones!

5 ways to encourage a love for music

  1. Always have music playing in the background.
It doesn’t matter what it is - pop, rock, reggae, blues, rap, showtunes, etc - children are shaped by their surroundings. While educational songs are great (I play them all the time for my 7-month-old) it’s just as important to let them hear some of the songs you enjoy! Concerned about screening songs? Try finding some instrumental-only playlists.

  2. Let your children explore songs they like.
Structure is important for children but so is independence. That’s why it’s always a good idea to give kids controlled choices (when appropriate). Does it matter what song is playing right now? No? Then let your child pick one out! They’ll get excited and start thinking about what they enjoy while choosing from the music you have available.

  3. Think outside of the box
Music isn’t just made by instruments - it’s all around us! What sounds can your child make with the things they find in your home? What music can they create with what’s on-hand? You can even introduce them to Blue Man Group or Stomp if they need some inspiration.

  4. Take them to experiences.
There’s nothing more magical than spending time with your family. And if you want to encourage a love for music, you have tons of options for bonding activities! Start by supporting local musicians, no matter the genre. You’re bound to have orchestras, choir concerts, jazz groups, and musicals somewhere in your area. If you have a city nearby, look into professional opportunities like Broadway shows or holiday concerts from big-name performance groups. Or you can start small by purchasing a karaoke machine for your home! The focus should be on making memories so have fun with it!

  5. Read musical storybooks!
You are what you eat but you love what you read. Okay, I may have made that last part up but it’s true! Getting your child excited about something starts with the little things, like what they see in their books at home.
