The Elephant's Shoes is a children's book about love, loss, and healing. We all make decisions in our life-some that make us happy, and some that we regret. Author Charity Yoder believes that everyone, even young children, can better learn how to cope with the sometimes-painful outcome of their choices. This is a beautiful story about the power of connection and how to move on with an open and compassionate heart....
I want to be clear that I'm going on goodread's 2 stars (triquetras here) which means "it was ok."
Three stars would be "liked it," and as much as I want to, I can't say that I really enjoyed the book.
The story is adorable, the character of Elephant is relatable, and the message kind.
I really think that being locked into a rhyme scheme did more harm than good for this one though. There were a couple times the narrative and the imagery didn't line up - a sunny picture while it was supposed to be a gloomy day, the passage of time wasn't clear.
Plus, I think Miss Elephant needs a name!
Overall, I think that breaking the rhyme scheme which only detracts and doesn't add would allow the author to get over some clunky wording (in order to reach the rhyming) and would make the story flow smoothly, and allow us to focus on the plot instead of trying to get through awkward phrasing.
About the Author
Charity Yoder is a writer living with her family and pets in Alberta, Canada. The Elephant’s Shoes is her first publication, inspired by her own life experiences that mirror those of the elephant protagonist. As a mother herself, she hopes this book will help young children navigate feelings of regret, as well as learn to let go and carry on when the decisions they make lead to something other than what they wanted.
